You have been invited for an interview! Congratulations. Are you nervous? That is absolutely natural. To reduce the anxiety, follow our tips to get well prepared and make the best impression on recruiters.
First, consider questions that are most commonly asked by recruiters and prepare your answers to them in advance. Frequently Asked Questions:
– Tell us something about yourself. Well, here you should not expand on how you adore cats or things like that (if cats are not your main area of competence :)). Talk about things relevant to your profession, your experience and, most importantly, – to this particular job opportunity.
– How would you describe yourself? /What are your strong points? Here is the best chance to highlight your skills and personal qualities that are advantageous to your speciality and this particular job. When mentioning your strong sides support them with some examples showing the way you demonstrate these benefits in real life.
– What are your weak points? This is a tricky one. Stay honest, but mention those disadvantages that are not relevant to the current position. For example, the job deals with constant travelling for business purposes. In this case, you could say you have not settled down yet and you find it boring to stay in one place all the time (if this is true, of course).
– Why do you want to work with us? / What attracts you in this job? / What do you know about our company? This kind of questions tracks your real interest towards the company and this job opportunity. Take your time to explore the company’s activities, especially – in your area of expertise. Make a short ”audit” of the company’s actions based on the published data available online. Then think how you could help the company to deal with its possible struggles, increase its competitiveness and bring it to the better level.
– Why are you looking for a job? / Why did you leave your previous employer? / Tell us about your former workplace etc. Recruiters do want to know what the main reason of your job-hunting was. It is highly important to deliver your arguments in a proper way. If a better compensation is your crucial point, do not put it in the first place. However, you can mention it, explaining why you need a certain salary increase at this point of life. Things that are really worth to mention: a) new challenges; b) switching the environment, travelling (if applicable); c) location closer to your home (especially important to mention for family people); d) company’s reputation and working climate; e) learning and development opportunities.
What is more do not only consider the questions that will be asked, but also think what would you like to know about the company and the job itself. Interview is always a two-side process: recruiters evaluate if you match this job, while you assess if this job matches you.
Here are some questions that can help you to get a better idea of your potential workplace.
– Why has this vacancy been created?
– Who would supervise me? Can I meet this person today?
– Would I supervise anybody?
– How many specialists are working in this department?
– How would my working day look like?
– What is the main issue of this job?
– Which opportunities does the company offer in terms of professional development?
– How would you describe the organisational culture?
