Social media penetrates our everyday life. No wonder that nowadays it is exploited not only for leisure, but for business as well. Particularly, social platforms are used daily by millions of people as tools for job search and head-hunting. Therefore, more and more companies realise that in order to stay competitive in the international labour market they need either to develop their presence in social media themselves or to outsource this job to other recruitment and marketing professionals. Particularly, Qreer.com team monitors online communities in various engineering and scientific areas and ensures exposure of relevant vacancies in those groups. Not only employers, but also competent specialists benefit from following social networks: that allows them to stay up-to-date in terms of emerging opportunities and keep in touch with recruiters.
Qreer.com conducted a survey aimed to discover how modern specialists use social websites when looking for jobs. The results of our survey are of particular interest to European companies as long as about 91% of respondents currently reside in Europe. We received responses from various age groups, however, there is an expected overweight of younger participants.
There is a clear tendency in frequency of visiting internet social platforms: most respondents check their pages in social networks on a daily basis. This outcome stresses the importance of regular activities that have to be carried out by companies to establish and retain relationships with their customers and (prospective) employees.
We asked our users if they have ever had a chance to find a job via social media. Interestingly, the percentage of people that were successfully hired by means of social networking is high – about 43%.
The rest of the survey was targeted on those 43% of respondents. We were interested on which exact social websites those specialists found their jobs. Not surprising, but still important: LinkedIn occupies 50% of responses. This fact reaffirms the idea that, in general, LinkedIn is the most powerful platform for both sides: recruiters and job-seekers. About 20% of respondents chose Facebook and 30% of respondents specified Vkontacte as a particular online platform they found a job on. Such networks as Twitter or business-related platforms Xing and Viadeo appeared to be the less popular amongst our respondents. We assume that not all the companies handle the style of messaging on Twitter (very short and focused) and interface of Xing or Viadeo. In addition, the last two mentioned are more local and language-oriented networks in comparison with LinkedIn. Nevertheless, we think that these networks also contain opportunities for recruiting if used properly.
One of our crucial findings shows that the biggest percent of respondents (42%) were able to find their job in one of social groups they are subscribed to. That means that it is highly efficient for businesses to place vacancies in relevant communities. On the other hand, for job seekers it highlights the fact that looking for jobs is literally a job itself and it is important to regularly track groups related to your professional profile. The outcomes also emphasise the significance of being proactive both for recruiters and job seekers (21% of participants reported that recruiters contacted them, 11% approached recruiters themselves). In addition, the results confirm that close circle relationships is still a great resource for hiring and finding a job, although it became digital (21% of respondents discovered their future job in their friends’ updates).
The survey we conducted once again draws attention of companies and recruiters from all the industries to the idea that it is important to discover those opportunities that online networks offer today. This is a certain key to achieve one’s career and business goals.
