Academic Ranking of World Universities 2017 (ARWU)
Since 2003, ShanghaiRanking has been producing a league table of the top 500 universities in the world. Recently, ShanghaiRanking Consultancy released the updated list of the World’s top 500 universities. This is also the first time that they also published the list of universities ranked between 501 and 800 as the ARWU World Top 500 Candidates. These universities have the potential to break into the Top 500 list in the near future.
Each year 1.200 universities are reviewed and the top 500 is published. For those people studying on Dutch Universities this is good news as this years list shows that Dutch universities are scoring higher then ever before. In total, 12 universities from the Netherlands are listed in the top 500.
Shanghai ARWU ranks universities based on different qualities. The look at the number of award-winning (Fields Medals and Nobel Prize) scientists are located there, how much of their research is cited and referenced around the world, and how much they’ve contributed to different academic fields. After calculating and comparing these criteria, ARWU ranks the universities accordingly.
USA & UK dominate top 10
USA and the UK are the only countries with universities on the top 10. The list is the following:
Harvard University has maintained the top spot in the ShanghaiRanking Academic Ranking of World Universities 2017 for the 15th year running. In fact, the top 10 universities remain unchanged from last year, although there has been some shifting in positions. The University of Cambridge, for example, has overtaken the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of California, Berkeley to take third position.

Dutch Universities
