    Do’s and Don’ts during a job interview

During a job interview it is important to give a good impression to the recruiter, however, it may not always be as easy as expected to do this. Qreer is a European technical job board and has experience with many job interview procedures at its customers. Therefore, in this blog we will share some do’s and dont’s in order to prepare you for a successful job interview.

Let’s start with the do’s during a job interview:
    1) Prepare yourself
Preparation is one of the key elements for a successful job interview. First of all, it is important that you have a good understanding of the type of company you’re applying for, the offered position and the company culture. knowing this will make you feel more confident and comfortable before going into the job interview.

You may also want to prepare some questions that the recruiter may want to ask you. Common questions asked are  ‘’What are you strengths?’’, ‘’What are projects/tools/software etc. you’ve worked with and can you name an example of this project?’’.

Finally, it is useful to bring a copy of your own CV, motivation letter or any other relevant documents as well as bringing a pen and paper or notebook where you can write down important feedback or information during the interview.

    2) Be positive
Your first and last impression are very important during an interview. A positive attitude includes smiling, being polite, and be dressed to the occasion. It will create a positive atmosphere during the job interview. Take note that it is not professional or appreciated to talk negative about previous employers or colleagues as it may give a wrong view of your character and you never know if it might be someone they know, and in the worst case, you insult.

    3) Make a good impression
Making a good impression during the whole process of your application is crucial. It starts from the first point of contact, via a phone call or email. This is especially the case for the recruiter, who is conducting the interview with you. When meeting the recruiter, it is important to give a strong handshake and to smile. It shows that you are confident, enthusiastic and friendly, which is of course a good first impression to give.  In addition, it is important to dress properly, this means to not overdress when it is not needed, but far from under-dressing. One tip, especially for women, is if you would like to wear a skirt it is important that below the knees and not wear too much make up, it is better to look more natural during a job interview.

The don’ts during a job interview:
    1) Do not be late
In Western countries, such as the Netherlands, it will not be appreciated if you are not on time. Being late shows that you are disinterested or not serious about the job opportunity. It is appropriate to arrive between 15 – 5 minutes in advance. This will give you extra preparation time to organize all your documents, visit to the toilet and to make sure that you can find the right place in the building on time.

    2) Do not lie
Of course you should not emphasize too much on the negative aspects about yourself and it is better to highlight the positive aspects about yourself. However, lying is not a solution in order to get the job. Sooner or later they will find out that you were not telling the truth during the job interview, which can have huge consequences in your future career.

    3) Do not forget to ask questions
Asking questions about the company or the offered position shows that your interest and willingness for working for this particular company. These questions can vary from ‘’ Could you tell me more about the responsibilities for this job?’’ or ‘’What are your expectations from me during the first two months?’’.

Plenty more tips could be pointed out, however this provides a solid basis to start with. It is important to be prepared and positive during the job interview. If you follow these 6 tips and tricks it will definitely help you in order to find a job in the (near) future.

Qreer wishes you good luck with finding a new career!
