To make you feel confident and comfortable in searching for vacancies throughout Europe, we provide you with some useful tips for making your way towards the right job.
Today we would like to highlight the issue of translating your CV to an international language. Mostly, this refers to English, however, in some cases it depends on countries and you are willing to work in.
The role specifics matters. While a software developer job may not require any other language rather than English, the situation may look differently with management and client-focused positions, even within IT-industry. For example, if you are looking for jobs in Germany, Austria, Luxembourg and Switzerland it is reasonable to make two versions of your resume: English and German – of course, only if you are really able to speak both of these languages.
Take your time to read. How to figure out which version of your CV to use, when you are applying for a vacancy? It sounds very trivial, but: please, read job descriptions carefully. In certain cases, recruiters mention in which specific language they prefer to receive resumes and cover letters. Believe us or not, even if a candidate technically matches all the requirements, this person can get refused at the very beginning, if he/she doesn’t follow the exact instructions listed in a vacancy layout. Remember: when a company asks you to send documents written in a particular language, it means these language skills are crucial for this role. Otherwise, it is sensible to use the same language as in a vacancy advertisement.
“Measure thrice and cut once”. What to do if you are not entirely confident about your language skills? In this case we would strongly recommend to ask your more competent friends for some help in checking your CV draft in terms of grammar and vocabulary. Another and more preferable option if your experience is considerable and you are aiming on a senior level position is to find a qualified translator who can assist you. Remember, that money you spend on your resume is an investment in your professional future. Most importantly: recruiters are your initial contacts with companies you want to work for and you will not have a second change to make the first impression!
Last but not the least: use our checklist to make sure you have not forgotten anything.
