Our team got interested on which particular conditions modern specialists are ready to leave their homes and move to another country for a better job.
Why did we actually turn our attention to this issue?
In fact, there is an obvious imbalance in employment: many qualified professionals are struggling to get hired in some countries, while recruiters are facing problems searching for the right candidates in others. As for Europe, the greatest job search difficulties remain in such countries as Greece or Spain. What is more, there is another bias connected to age and reciprocally ? experience. For example, the number of young unemployed people in Europe is depressingly huge: 2,5* million women and 2,9* men have no job, which is 22.5%* of the whole European population. Compare this figure with the overall unemployment rate in EU – 10.4%.*
*The figures are extracted from the European Commission official quarterly report; June, 2014
Due to these obstacles of developing one’s career or even stating it, many people are getting more open and flexible for various distant job possibilities: whether it is a bigger city or another country.
Over 110 technical specialists took part in our survey and now we are ready to introduce the results. Approximately 59% of our respondents currently reside in Europe. According the outcomes, more than half of respondents have ever changed their permanent location because of emerged career opportunities (55% moved abroad and 25% – to another city). In contrast, only 20% of participants always worked in their home area.
The readiness to relocate among our respondents is extremely high: 74% of people we questioned admitted they want to move and additional 28% are potentially ready for this. First, this high level of readiness is linked with the previous experience of our respondents, most of whom had already moved for a job in past, so it does not seem to be very stressful for them. Furthermore, this outcome can also be connected with a lack of vacancies for these professionals in their local areas – on one hand, and better opportunities abroad – on the other hand.
We scrutinized which conditions would push professionals to leave their homes for a better future. As you can see on the picture below, better salary dominates amongst other possible reasons of relocation (61%). However, the gap is not huge. This leads to a point, that professionals are not just longing for big earnings. There should be something more than just a good compensation package to attract a skilled specialist. With regard to our participants, interesting functions (54%) are almost as important as a higher salary. Also, a permanent contact (46%) appears to be advantageous for a hiring company, not to mention its reputation (43%).
Hence, although we live in the era of computer technologies allowing various freelance and remote schemes of work, many technicians still value stable permanent employment most of all. Importantly, the content of work should be enough interesting to make such serious life changes as moving abroad.
The overall impression of technicians who took part in our survey is slightly pessimistic. 32% of participants believe that their local labour market is quite saturated, while 35% agree there is still high level of unemployment. Moreover, 19% of respondents assume that some industries offer less jobs and 25% think some professional fields contain less job opportunities than other ones. What is more, our respondents shared some additional information. Many of them notice that the biggest challenge is to find a job as a fresh graduate which we commented on at the beginning of the article. Some pointed out that oil and gas companies are not hiring as actively as they did before. Other participants report difficulties in finding jobs as a marine and aerospace engineer.
We firmly believe that for companies it is highly important to listen to their prospective employees, feeling where ”the wind of labour” blows as long as they want to catch the most qualified and experienced professionals. That is why Qreer.com is here for you to collect and analyse the freshest information about international recruitment.
